Them: “It says here that you were approved.”
Me: “Yes, but the letter says ‘benefits will be allowed for the proposed cochlear implanT.’” (Emphasis on no s, ie, just one.)
Them: “Well, the request we received was for bilateral. Does the letter say single?”
Me: “No, but it doesn’t say bilateral, and ‘cochlear implant’ is singular, so I wanted to ensure everything was in order.”
Them: “The request we received was for bilateral, so that is what you were approved for.”
Semantics suck!
But bilateral approvals rock!!!!! And that’s all that matters!!!!!!
(For the record, I spoke with 4 different people at UHC, and the first 3 were wonderful, polite, quite helpful, and totally saw why I wanted clarification. One even said she would be calling too! It was just the last guy who wasn’t quite so much, and I get the feeling he typically doesn’t deal directly with customers.)
Just to make it totally clear: Danny’s insurance approval is in hand and we are ready to go bilateral in the new year!

Yay! What wonderful news Kel!
AWESOME!!!!!
Yeah! Congratulations!
We actually had the same issue with our insurance approval letter – the singularity on the approval. We did exactly what you did – call right away! We were actually told that it is b/c bilateral is so new they haven’t updated their systems to reflect that approval yet.
