Uniform Info
The Cub Scout uniform has been a part of Cub Scouting from the very beginning. It serves to give the Scouts a sense of belonging, and also offering opportunities for Scouts to show off their achievements as they climb the ranks. There are three different uniforms depending on rank. Scouts are encouraged to wear the uniform shirt and neckerchief to all den and pack meetings throughout the school year; the uniform is not expected during the summer months unless specially noted by the Pack (typically only for the Good Turn Memorial Day event).
Lions
Lions have their own unique t-shirt just for this Kindergarten rank! This is available at most Scout outfitter shops, and allows for movement, flexibility, and fun. Like other ranks, it also has an optional hat available for Scouts to wear.
Tigers, Wolves, and Bears
The core ranks of Cub Scouting wear the familiar navy blue Cub Scout uniform shirt. Each rank has a unique neckerchief that distinguishes each rank from the other, along with a rank-specific slide. Scouts may also create homemade slides if they choose. Cub Scouts also offers official pants, belts, socks, and rank-specific hats; these put together a full uniform, but for most purposes, the shirt and neckerchief are considered the “core” uniform as youth grow quickly! When purchasing a shirt, we recommend you buy it a little big so that it can last a few years.
Webelos and Arrow of Light
Beginning in Webelos, Scouts have the choice to continue wearing their navy uniform or to change to the tan shirt worn by leaders and by the older Scouts BSA Troops. Traditionally, Scouts will make this change when their navy uniform is starting to get a little too small, and once again are encouraged to buy a little big so that it can last a few years if the Scout intends to cross into a Troop after earning their Arrow of Light. With either uniform, both ranks wear the plaid neckerchief with the Webelos symbol on it.
Insignia
Insignia, the patches worn on uniforms, have specific placement. Many Scout Shops offer a badge sewing service, and the base patches (American flag, council patch, etc) can be purchased already sewn on. Rank badges and other insignia are added over time. You can use this reference to check placement.
